The Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield is working towards becoming a Dementia Friendly Community.

On World Alzheimer’s Day, 21st September 2021, Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council facilitated the first meeting of the Royal Sutton Coldfield Dementia Friendly Community Steering Group.

An Alzheimer’s Society initiative, a Dementia Friendly Community is a place where people with dementia are understood, respected, and supported. It aims to promote awareness and understanding of dementia among local residents.

The Sutton Coldfield steering group compromises a diverse group of dedicated individuals, including dementia friends (individuals who have undertaken training and pledged to conduct an action to support their community), together with residents and representatives of community groups, support services and the Town Council.

There are seven criteria that communities must work towards as part of the recognition process, including raising awareness among key organisations and business who support and interact with those living with dementia. The group is working hard to engage with local organisations to help them understand dementia, and to feel confident in supporting those with dementia who may use their services.

The group is also focusing on developing a strong voice for people with dementia who live in our community, so they feel heard.

The group is organising a range of events and activities for Dementia Action Week, 16th -22nd May 2022, which aims to raise awareness and encourage people to’ act on dementia’.

This Dementia Action Week, we’ll be encouraging those who are concerned they or a loved one may be experiencing signs of dementia to seek guide guidance and support to feel empowered to take the next steps.

Activities during the week will be run by local groups and services within Sutton Coldfield and will look to provide or signpost to practical advice and information on what next steps to take. This will include what to expect during and after the diagnosis process, and what support Alzheimer’s Society and other organisations can offer throughout.

The activities will include opportunities to enjoy the town’s green spaces, music sessions and coffee morning and afternoon tea sessions. Full details will be released as the week approaches.

The group is also keen to encourage current Dementia Friends and relevant organisations to join and work with them. If residents, organisations or support services wish to find out more, please contact enquiries@suttoncoldfieldtowncouncil.gov.uk.
