We
have been running Memory Cafes for those in the local community living with
dementia for around 7 years. Once we started re-opening after the
pandemic, we realised how much the lockdown had affected those with dementia
due to isolation and lack of stimulation so decided to add extra cafes in
different areas to help us reach out and help as many people as we can.
All
our cafes run from 10.30am – 12.30pm
Monday – Wylde Green
URC, Britwell Road, B73 5SW
Tuesday – All Saints
Church Centre, Belwell Lane, B74 4TR
Thursday – Aldridge
Community Centre, Middlemore Lane, WS9 8AN
Friday – Sutton
Coldfield Methodist Church, South Parade, B72 1QY
Our
cafes offer a relaxed and friendly environment where people living with
dementia can feel safe and secure. We encourage friendship and provide
emotional support and social stimulation to reduce the isolation often felt.
The café is somewhere they can chat, laugh, cry, share problems and can just be
themselves and feel accepted as part of a great social group.
There
are different activities planned at each session for everyone to take part in
if they wish but there is no obligation or pressure to do so. Each month we try to include a mixture of music,
movement (seated tai chi, line dancing, Irish dancing), games, art / craft and
talks from outside organisations. Shared activities promote a sense of
belonging whilst evoking long lost happy memories. By remaining involved
and active a person with dementia can maintain their life skills and
independence for longer.
Family
members / carers can find advice and support from others going through similar
situations. Regular visits from the Alzheimer’s Society and the Carers
Hub provide any specialist advice they need.
