Hello to all on this rainy Tuesday,
It’s Kyle again with more literacy
opportunities for charities, community organisations and businesses in
Birmingham.
This week I am sharing our FREE ‘teaching video-making’ workshop
for community and youth workers, as well as a new ‘Global Stories’
resource pack, and details of our flagship Early Years conference.
Community and youth
workers: Teaching video-making workshop
In the last newsletter I launched our #MyBirminghamStory
campaign – a call-out for local residents of all ages to share the stories that
connect them to this great city.
- Are you a youth worker or community worker looking to
work with a group for the campaign?
- Would you like to build your expertise and confidence
teaching video-making?
Fear not! We have teamed up with Dr Alaina
Schempp, an acclaimed film academic from the University of Birmingham, to run a
FREE CPD session on teaching video making.
WHEN AND WHERE? The workshop will
take place online, from 3.45 until 4.45pm on Monday 26 February. You
need to sign up in advance to receive a Zoom link.
Alaina will explain some simple editing
tips, and give guidance on working with basic equipment (e.g. smartphones,
cheap cameras), and the particulars of the #MyBirminghamStory campaign.
All settings: Global
Stories resource pack
To celebrate storytelling week, and to
increase the accessibility of literature from other countries, we worked with
one of our Literacy Champions
(Helen) to build the Global Stories resource.
This online story collection offers diverse
and thought-provoking tales and poems to communities across Birmingham. The
pack includes stories from Romania, Korea and Spain in both English and the
original languages.
Check out Global Stories here.
Settings working with
Early Years: Talk to Your Baby Conference
As you may know, the National Literacy
Trust’s Talk To Your Baby conference
will take place at Conway Hall in London on Tuesday 12 March 2024. Talk
To Your Baby is our flagship early years conference with a focus on
language development and learning in the first 1001 days of a child’s
life.
We’d love for you and members of your team
to come along and hear from professionals, parents and local business leaders,
discussing the impact of locally coordinated speech and language
pathways.
Tickets cost £220 and are available on our
website. Find out more here: literacytrust.org.uk/talktoyourbaby2024
