What fantastic news to hear about the 100th birthday of local theatre company Highbury Players who are planning a celebration of being 100 years old this year!
Highbury
Players were originally formed by members of Erdington Independent Labour
Party, in 1924. Under the leadership of John English who was influential
in theatre across the Midlands, the Players went on to construct the theatre
building, completing it during the war. As well as being a central part
of the local community the theatre has gone on to influence amateur dramatics
across the region and beyond.
On Sunday
the 1st September we are throwing open the theatre doors to the whole community
and are having an open day. As well as theatre tours we will be showing
footage of the theatre under construction, we have guest performers and
speakers including playwright David Tristram and author and columnist
Jenny Landreth. Local performers and singers will be putting on shows
throughout the day and visitors will also have the opportunity to ‘have a go’
at theatrical skills and crafts, and to explore the theatre's history. We
are also launching a new Highbury youth theatre group which we hope will be a
valuable asset to the local community.
The open day is running between 10:30 to 5:00 on the Sunday. Details of the open day will be promoted as soon as timings are confirmed.
