Hello again to friends of the National Literacy
Trust in Birmingham,
I hope that everyone had a restful Easter break. Eid
Mubarak to all those celebrating.
This week, I have important details of the Birmingham Libraries consultation which is live now, and a round-up from our Spring
campaign, #MyBirminghamStory. Our Summer campaign launches next week – so stay
tuned!
Feel free to share this newsletter with your
networks.
All partners - Birmingham Libraries
Consultation
The council have launched a city-wide consultation survey about the future of the Birmingham library service.
This is live now and will close on Wednesday 17th July.
The survey asks for your preferences surrounding four
proposed ‘ways forward’ in the context of funding cuts. These are set out
in the review document attached. Your responses are relevant even if you don’t
ever or regularly use Birmingham libraries.
As literacy advocates, I think it is really
important that we make our voices heard by completing this consultation and
sharing it with our communities. It is quite a lengthy and detailed survey
(allow at least 20 minutes), but well worth the effort.
If you would like us to send volunteers to support
your community members to complete this survey, please email me with a good date and time for a visit. The council are also offering online meetings
explaining the specific options for each community library (see timetable here).
All partners - #MyBirminghamStory
Over Spring, many of you participated in our
#MyBirminghamStory campaign – a call-out for stories that connect people to
Birmingham.
We received many wonderful submissions: including
storytellers from The Factory Young People’s Centre and Hallmoor School as well
as local residents and writers of all ages. All of the videos and written
submissions are proudly profiled on our website. Do have a look!
If you missed the campaign and would still like to
submit a #MyBirminghamStory, we would always welcome your response. You can
find worksheet resources on our website, and a CPD about teaching video making, from Dr Alaina Schempp, on
YouTube.
