Special EventWhere are we? In Search of British Disabled People of Colour
Artist Christopher Samuel and Birmingham Museums Trust co-CEOs Sara Wajid MBE and Zak Mensah would like to invite you to one of two special events:
Mon 22 April, 11am - 12noon, online (Microsoft Teams).
and/or
Thu 25 April, 11am - 12:30pm, in person at Thinktank Event Suite, 3rd floor, Millennium Point, Curzon Street, B4 7XG.
In collaboration with UAL: Decolonising the Arts, Christopher Samuel is currently undertaking a 20/20 residency that seeks to uncover underrepresented and missing voices of disabled people of colour in Birmingham Museums Trust’s collections, and to begin to redress that balance.
This is your opportunity to meet some of Birmingham Museum Trust’s senior management who are leading change within the organisation, to hear more about Christopher’s exciting & timely project, and to find out how you might get involved in supporting the project’s vital aims.
"To not see yourself represented in our cultural and heritage spaces makes them feel ‘not for you’ - and says that your story does not matter. By seeking out authentic voices from the disabled community of colour in and around Birmingham and working with those in the sector who can inspire and create change, I hope to start an important conversation and to create a lasting legacy for Birmingham Museums Trust."

Christopher Samuel is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice is rooted in identity and disability politics, often echoing the many facets of his own lived experience.
His work tells stories, often raising awareness of his own experiences as a black disabled artist, missing representation within archives, and shared narratives from others in similar circumstances.

About this 20/20 Residency: Christopher Samuel / Birmingham Museums Trust / UAL: Decolonising the Arts 20/20
Christopher’s recent work has begun to expose the absence of black and disabled people’s voices in many of our shared cultural and historical spaces.
This residency in collaboration with Birmingham Museums Trust and UAL: Decolonising the Arts continues that investigation.
The residency has begun with Christopher exploring BMT’s vast collections for how (or IF) the lives of black and disabled people migrating into or living in Birmingham have already been cataloged, recorded or archived.
Now, Christopher is responding to what his research has uncovered.
This creative response will result in a new piece of artwork being created, with input from the local disabled community of colour, for acquisition into BMT’s permanent collection in 2025. |
