Support for adults with additional needs in the Sutton Coldfield constituency

The Sutton Coldfield Neighbourhood Network is one of two pilots in Birmingham looking at the provision and development of local community support to people with additional needs. The first part of our project has been to carry out asset mapping of the constituency which identified local groups, organisations and services which support people over the age of 18 who have additional needs. The pilot builds on the work already carried out across NNS to support older people, and the findings of our work in Sutton Coldfield will, we hope, inform the wider network when this is rolled out across Birmingham in 2022.

We have also endeavoured to build partnerships with both local and citywide assets providing local specialist provision, leading to a very strong working group to advise our main NNS project steering group. Our aim now is to identify the gaps in existing provision and plan out how NNS can add value and understand where investment should be best placed.

An emerging theme includes:

The provision of local organisations (assets) supporting adults with additional needs in Sutton Coldfield appears low, but there is a strong appetite amongst the wider and non-specialist assets here to offer accessible and inclusive support.

The existing groups include the active Sutton Coldfield Disability Action Group (SCDAG), an organisation with their finger on the pulse of disability and access issues in the constituency and Square Peg, who are a local provider of support for younger people with autism and learning disabilities. But citywide organisations like Midland Mencap, Focus and BID also have presence on the ground in Sutton Coldfield. One of our early achievements has been establishing an outreach advice drop-in for people who are deaf or have hearing loss, which is provided by BID services at the Age Concern Birmingham office in Boldmere.

We are also planning capacity building workshops for wider groups, aiming to make more services in Sutton Coldfield inclusive and accessible.

As our pilot continues to move into the active delivery phase we are keen to fund and develop more assets and activities for adults with additional needs in Sutton Coldfield and would encourage potential partners to get in touch with us and get involved. Please email us at

NNS team exhibit at Sutton Coldfield Expo event

On Saturday 25th September members of the Sutton Coldfield Neighbourhood Network Scheme delivery team from Age Concern Birmingham and Compass Support were on the main shopping parade at Sutton Coldfield Expo. Expo is an annual street-based exhibition of local organisations that provide services to the local community.

Our team were there to meet the public as well as local assets and partners from the constituency. We surveyed local people about their interests and needs as well as promoting the NNS network and the services of our partner organisations. It was nice to welcome David Wilson to his first NNS event, David is our new Digital Inclusion Officer and he had many useful conversations with members of the public and partners.

Other members of the NNS team present on Saturday included Keat Moore, Suzy Summerfield and Pete Millington.

It was fantastic to meet up with partners from local assets, especially as we have not had face-to-face contact with one another for so long during the Covid period, when Zoom and Teams were the main way of networking. The weather was also in our favour and the sun shone down on Sutton Coldfield all day.

Thanks to everyone who popped by to meet us.

The Communitea Café Allotment Plot

The Communitea Café Allotment Plot is a space to socialise whilst enjoying the benefits of being outdoors. It’s a tranquil spot where there is always a smile to be shared and enthusiasts wanting to share advice and tips. Participants work together towards a common goal - providing food for the Communitea Café, to be shared by the local community.

Location Sunnybank Road/Sheffield Road Allotments –The site can be accessed by pedestrians from Sunnybank Road and by car via the Sheffield Road entrance, with our plot being adjacent to the car park. There are toilet facilities on site. The project was launched in 2019.

Our fantastic Lead Volunteer summarised her experience…

“Providing produce for the Communitea Café was very rewarding and much appreciated. Volunteers taking their fresh produce home and getting pleasure from cooking it and eating it has been a delight. The pumpkin carving family event we ran last November with our home-grown pumpkins was great fun”.

2020 brought its challenges but we used the time to carry out essential maintenance and improve accessibility.

In 2021 activity has been re-established with a weekly group and gardening activities and a gardening therapy support group for bereaved carers

If you are interested in supporting our lead volunteers, joining a communal gardening group, or want more information please get in touch.
